An ice maker is a mold, a fill valve, a heater and a timer. Water goes in, freezes, gets warmed loose and drops. Nothing about it is clever, and that is precisely why it fails so predictably: there are only four things in the chain, and they give up in the same order almost every time.
First the cubes get smaller. The fill valve has a small orifice and a screen behind it, and both narrow with use. Less water reaches the mold per cycle, so the cube that forms is short. Most people never notice this stage. It happens over a couple of years and the ice still looks like ice.
Second, the cycle gets slower. Harvest works by warming the mold just enough for the ice to release. Anything sitting on the mold surface is an insulator, so the heater has to run longer to get the same release. The machine is now spending more time and more energy on every batch, and the freezer compartment is being warmed a little more each cycle than it was designed for.
Third, the valve stops seating. This is the failure people call about. The solenoid closes but a deposit holds the seat open a fraction, water keeps dribbling into a full mold, and you find a sheet of ice on the freezer floor or a column of ice down the back of the bin. From the outside it looks like a sudden catastrophic failure. It is the last stage of something that has been happening for years.
Before any of that is worth chasing, three cheaper explanations have to be ruled out, because each of them imitates a dead ice maker exactly.
The shut-off arm or bin sensor. If the arm is caught on a bag of frozen food, or the optical sensor is fouled or blocked by ice, the machine will simply stop making ice and report nothing. It is the first thing we look at and it is regularly the whole answer.
The supply. A saddle valve on a copper line, the kind fitted quickly during a renovation, is a well-known source of a supply that has slowly closed itself. A kinked line behind the unit does the same. If no water is arriving, the ice maker is not at fault.
The freezer itself. Ice production falls off sharply if the compartment is not holding a low enough temperature, and a freezer that is running warm because of a frosted evaporator or a failed fan is a refrigeration fault wearing an ice maker’s costume. Check the compartment temperature before condemning the mold.
The fill tube first, because a partially frozen fill tube produces the same small-cube symptom as a restricted valve and costs nothing to rule out. Then the valve screen and orifice. Then the mold surface. Then the harvest heater and its thermostat. Then, and only then, the control.
Replacing a control board because the ice maker is behaving strangely is the most common wasted repair in this trade. The control is the last thing to fail and the first thing to get blamed, and on a built-in unit it is also one of the more expensive parts in the machine.
We clean and clear where that still works, replace the valve and the mold where it does not, and inspect the supply line and any filter while we are in there. A filter that has been in place for four years is doing nothing useful for anyone — most inline refrigerator filters address taste and particulate, and they have a service life measured in months.
Jacksonville tap water is hard, and JEA publishes a figure for it. That is the plain reason a fill valve and a mold are consumable parts in this city rather than lifetime ones, and why a descaling interval quoted in a national manual may be optimistic at your address. If there is no treatment on the line at all, the replacement valve will travel the same road as the original, and we would rather tell you that once than sell you the same part twice.
