From the bench

Shop notes, one fault at a time

Short write-ups on things we keep finding. No theory we have not seen in a kitchen.

What keeps coming back through the shop?

Shop Note 006

Viking Refrigerator Warranty and Parts

Two years covers the whole refrigerator, the sealed system runs longer, and the plate inside the cabinet decides which filter or part is right.

Shop Note 007

Viking Freezer Codes and When to Call

Most Viking freezer codes are door, temperature or cleaning alarms you can clear, but a sensor code that will not reset needs a technician.

Shop Note 005

Storm Season and a Viking Control Board

A board that died during a storm and a board that has been getting stranger for months are two different repairs. The history matters.

Shop Note 004

Loud Viking Hood, Room Full of Smoke

Noise is not airflow. Before anyone buys a blower, open a window and run the hood again. That test is free and it settles most of these.

Shop Note 003

Viking Igniter Clicking, Burner Not Lit

Spark, gas, path. A burner that keeps clicking without lighting is missing one of the three, and it is usually the cheapest one.

Shop Note 001

How a Viking Ice Maker Fails, in Stages

Smaller cubes first, then a slower harvest, then a valve that will not seat and a sheet of ice on the freezer floor. The order matters more than the part.

What it costs

What do the faults in these notes cost to put right?

The visit and the whole diagnostic sequence are $80 flat, and that comes off the bill the moment you approve the work. The work below has run $200–$970 in parts and labor after that, and the figure on your estimate is written down before a part is ordered.

Typical repair bands, Viking equipment, parts and labor together.
Work Parts and labor
$80 diagnostic Flat, credited toward the repair
Igniter or burner assembly $200–$530
Oven thermostat or heating element $200–$570
Control board or touch panel $410–$970
Refrigeration fan or defrost system $240–$650

A band is where the work has landed, not a quote. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any tool comes out. 90 days on labor, 365 days on parts. The whole table is on the pricing page.

Asked on the phone

What do readers ask after a note?

What does the kind of fault these notes describe cost?
$80 flat to come out and find the fault, and that comes off the bill the moment you approve the repair. Past that the job lands in a band: igniter or burner assembly $200–$530, oven thermostat or heating element $200–$570. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any tool comes out. Every repair carries 90 days on labor and 365 days on parts.
Is the appliance a note describes worth repairing?
Set the band against what the replacement costs: professional range, the usual repair-or-replace comparison $6,500–$14,500; built-in refrigerator or column $9,500–$17,500; built-in dishwasher $1,600–$3,200. Those are appliance-only figures, before delivery, fitting or cabinetry, which is why a repair inside the bands above usually wins by a wide margin. Where it does not, we say so at the diagnostic rather than quote the work.
Do you work on anything other than Viking?
No. Viking Range, LLC builds kitchen appliances — ranges, rangetops, wall ovens, built-in refrigeration, ventilation hoods and dishwashers — and that equipment is the whole of what this shop takes in. One make means the parts on the van, the manuals and the failure patterns are the ones we see every week. We are an independent repair shop.

What customers said

After a call, in their words

4.3 out of 5, across 77 published customer reviews. Read every one of them.

  • The griddle ran hotter at one end than the other and my breakfast proved it every weekend. He got underneath, found a tube partly blocked, cleared it and checked both ends with a meter before packing up.

    Emmett D.

  • Door glass had fogged between the panes and the seal round the edge was blackened. He stripped the door, cleaned both inner panes, fitted a new seal and reset the hinge tension while it was apart.

    Verity D.

  • Every burner sparked whenever I turned one knob, which is unsettling in a house this old. He found moisture tracking across the switch block, dried it out and replaced it, and only the chosen burner lights.
