More often than anywhere else we cover, the unit we have been asked to look at is not in the kitchen at all — it is in a garage, on a screened lanai, or built into an outdoor island. That single fact changes the diagnosis before we have touched anything, because a refrigeration system is only as good as the air it is asked to reject heat into. It also changes what counts as a fault. A unit that holds temperature perfectly from November to April and drifts three degrees warm every July is not necessarily broken. It may be doing exactly what it was designed to do, in an ambient it was never designed against. Sorting those two cases apart is most of the work here, and getting it wrong is how people pay for a compressor that was never the problem. ## What the houses do Mandarin was a separate riverside village long before Jacksonville’s 1968 consolidation absorbed it, and it still reads that way: big lots, deep oak canopy, and houses set well back from the road along Mandarin Road and the streets running down toward the St. Johns. The postwar and later stock — much of it from the 1980s onward through Loretto and Beauclerc — brought large kitchens with room for more than one refrigeration unit. That is the local signature. A Mandarin kitchen frequently has a built-in refrigerator inside, an undercounter beverage or wine unit at an island, and a second full-size box out in the garage or in an outdoor kitchen on a screened lanai. ## Refrigeration where the air conditioning is not The garage unit is the one we get called to most, and it is the one nobody expects to fail. A refrigerator rejects heat into the air around it. A garage in Jacksonville in July is routinely well above the ambient temperature the unit was designed against, so the compressor runs a far higher duty cycle than it ever would indoors, the condenser has to work against a smaller temperature difference, and the whole machine ages faster in calendar time. Outdoor kitchen refrigeration on a lanai has the same problem plus humidity and insects in the condenser. If the unit was not specified for outdoor use in the first place, it will not last, and no repair changes that. We will tell you which situation you are in. Replacing a compressor in a garage unit that is going to face the same summer again next year is a decision, not a fix, and you should get to make it with the facts. ## Island hoods and long ducts Large Mandarin kitchens tend to put the cooking suite on an island, which means the hood duct has to run up, across a ceiling and out — long, with turns, and often reduced somewhere to get through a joist bay. An island hood that has never cleared smoke properly since the house was built usually has a duct problem, not a blower problem. The test is cheap: clean the baffle filters, run it again, and see if anything changes. If the filters were the issue, that is a dishwasher cycle. If they were not, we look at the duct before anyone spends money on a motor. ## The wine and beverage units Undercounter units in Mandarin islands are almost always front-breathing through a toe grille, and that grille is almost always partly blocked by cabinetry, kickboard or dust. A wine cabinet drifting three or four degrees above setpoint through the summer is far more often a smothered condenser than a lost charge. We pull the grille first. It is free, and it ends the conversation more often than not. ## Repair or replace, on a second box Because so many Mandarin kitchens carry more than one refrigeration unit, the repair-versus-replace question comes up here more often than anywhere else in the county, and the honest answer is not the same for every box in the house. A built-in unit is worth repairing far longer than a freestanding one. It is fitted into cabinetry, trimmed to the run, and often panelled to match, so replacing it is a joinery project as well as an appliance purchase, and the cabinet, the doors and the trim are usually still sound when a component fails. Compressors, boards, fans, hinges and seals are all serviceable parts on that kind of machine. A fifteen-year-old freestanding unit in a hot garage is the other case. If it has a leaking evaporator or a failed compressor, the money is usually better spent on a unit rated for the conditions it is going to live in.
