Symptoms we get called for ## How it shows up - Dishes on the top rack come out dry but dirty - A white film covers glassware no matter what detergent is used - Water stands in the sump at the end of the cycle - The cycle runs far longer than it used to - The door drops instead of holding at half open - There is a smell that returns a day after cleaning the filter A dishwasher is a pump, a heater, a couple of spray arms and a control. Water is taken in, lifted, thrown at dishes, filtered and thrown again, then pushed out. Everything that goes wrong with one goes wrong somewhere in that loop, which is why we diagnose it in the order the water actually travels rather than in the order the symptoms are described. ## The loop, in order Fill first. A machine that never gets enough water cannot wash whatever else is working, and the fill path is short: the supply valve under the sink, the inlet valve on the machine, and the float or pressure sensor that tells the control the tub is full. A partly closed supply valve left over from another trade’s visit is a genuinely common finding and costs nothing to check. Wash next. The circulation pump has to make pressure, and the spray arms have to turn freely and pass that pressure through open jets. The outer holes of the upper arm are the smallest and the last to receive pressure, so they are the first to block — which is why the classic call is a machine that cleans the bottom rack perfectly and leaves the top rack dirty. Almost every owner reads that as a loading problem. Pull the upper arm, hold it up to a light, and count how many jets you can actually see through. Heat third. A dishwasher heats its own water on most cycles, and a heating element that is coated, cracked or open will not raise it fast enough. The symptom is not usually cold dishes; it is a cycle that has quietly grown much longer, because the control is holding the program while it waits for a temperature it can no longer reach quickly. A machine that used to run ninety minutes and now runs three hours is telling you about heat, not about the timer. Drain last, because drain problems are the easiest to mistake for everything else. ## Film on glass is two different problems A white haze that wipes off with a finger is deposit left behind when water evaporates off the glass. A cloudiness that does not wipe off is etched glass, and that is permanent — it comes from the opposite recipe, too much detergent at too high a temperature in water carrying very little mineral. Telling the two apart under a light takes seconds and decides whether we are fixing a machine or changing a habit, so we do it before quoting anything. ## Drainage Standing water in the sump at the end of a cycle is a drain path problem, and the path has four candidate blockages: the filter, the pump impeller, the drain hose loop, and the air gap or disposer connection at the sink. Broken glass is the usual culprit in the impeller, and it is the reason we do not simply order a drain pump on a phone description. Half the time the pump is fine and there is a shard wedged against the vane. A newly installed disposer with its knockout plug still in place will stop a dishwasher draining completely, and so will a drain hose that has lost its high loop behind the cabinet. Both are found in minutes and neither is a part. Smell that comes back a day after the filter is cleaned means there is standing water somewhere it cannot be seen — a sagging drain hose, or a sump that is not emptying fully. ## Doors and old cabinetry Built-in dishwashers hang their door weight on a spring or cable system tuned to the door panel that was fitted. In Riverside and Avondale kitchens where a custom wood panel has been added to a machine that shipped without one, the door frequently drops because nobody adjusted the spring tension for the extra mass. That is a fifteen-minute correction that a lot of people live with for years. The other door fault is the seal. A dishwasher that leaves a damp patch on the floor at the front left corner is usually a gasket that has taken a set, or a tub that is no longer square because the machine was screwed to the counter while it was sitting on an uneven floor. We put a level on it before we sell a door. ## What we will tell you plainly A dishwasher is one of the few built-in appliances where the repair-versus- replace line is genuinely close, and it moves with the part. A spray arm, a door spring, a filter, an inlet valve or a drain pump is straightforward work. A cracked tub, a failed main control on an older machine, or corrosion at the sump weld is where the money stops making sense, and we would rather say so at the diagnostic than sell you the first of three repairs.
